Cattle Rustling Menace: Katsina deploys Microchip Tracking Technology

Piqued by incessant cases of cattle rustling and loss of animals and livestock herds in the state with its attendant economic loss of the people, Katsina state government has commenced installation of microchip trackers on cows in the state.

The technology which was was unveiled and demonstrated at the weekend at Ronka in the Safana Local Government Area of Katsina State is powered by telecommunication giant, MTN..

It was demonstrated two bulls belonging to the state Governor Aminu Masari and Alhaji Zakari Ummarou, the Prefect of Maradi, Niger Republic..The microchip tracker, which is mounted on one of  the ears of the animals, when prompted on mobile  phones, displays vital information to potential buyers or security operatives.

The technology according to the representatives of MTN provide necessary assistance to the telecommunication service provider, MTN, to ensure the success of the project in the state and across Nigeria.

The governor said, “There is no doubt that this technology is bound to assist us in our efforts at reducing cattle rustling in the state and also aid our export drive, pledging that “we shall give necessary support to the communication service provider to succeed in this project.

Masari then urged his Governor brothers in the North West zone to adopt his model to address the perennial menace of cattle rustling in the zone when he said “I do hope my counterparts in the North-West would take a cue from us and adopt this approach too to curb cattle rustling.”
