Abia: PDP announces new governorship candidate after death of Prof Ikonne

The immediate past Chief of Staff to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, Chief Okey Ahiwe, has emerged winner of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship primary election in the State.

The election became necessary following the death of Prof. Uche Ikonne who was to fly the party’s flag in the 2023 general election.

The Chairman of the PDP Primary Election Committee, Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, announced the results as follows:

Total vote cast – 516

Chief Okey Ahiwe – 469

Rt Hon Ude Oko Chukwu – 12 Votes

Don Lulu – 12 Votes

Samson Orji – 11

Ikonne died on January 25, 2023, at the National Hospital Abuja after a brief illness.

His son who announced Ikonne’s death in a statement said, “I regret to announce the death of my dear father, Prof Eleazar Uchenna Ikonne, who died at the National Hospital Abuja today January 2023 25, by 4 am after a brief illness.

“He was recovering after taking proper treatment in the United Kingdom but relapsed a few days ago leading to multiple cardiac arrests from which he didn’t recover from.

“Further details and arrangements would be made known to the public after deliberations and meetings are made within the family”.
